There is no cheesier day in America than Super Bowl Sunday.
It’s the holiday when our nation orders more than 12.5 million pizzas. When we consume more than 20 million pounds of cheese. And it’s the reason why we’re starting Super Bowl week with an episode that took us months to make.
Our investigation begins with a conspiracy theory that’s now spread all across both social and print media. (One viral TikTok video about it has been watched more than 10.5 million times.) What it alleges is that:
The U.S. government spent billions of taxpayer dollars to buy cheese
Then stored millions of pounds of that cheese in underground caves
And then planted government scientists inside fast-food chains
Where they invented new products — specifically, stuffed-crust pizza
With the mission of getting Americans to eat said government cheese
And this conspiracy, when typed out this way, might sound ridiculous.
But the truth, correspondent David Gardner reports, is even crazier.
So please join us on a journalistic journey to the gooey center of this story — which involves, but is not limited to: farmers, shadow agencies, the Kansas City Chiefs, the Supreme Court, an actual place known as SubTropolis, MrBeast, James Harden’s beard, Pete Rose, and — naturally — Donald Trump.
DKN/YOUTUBE SPOILER ALERT:
Happy Episode No. 200 (!!!),
