So, Pablo Torre Finds Out is a show that recently traveled to Oklahoma, to investigate a haunted NBA hotel, and Minnesota, to commune with the best celebrator in sports. We published a taste test of athlete-branded weed on the same day that we won an Edward R. Murrow Award for our interview with a trans softball player who is, yes, bad at softball.
Today’s episode sets a different standard.
It is the case of Charles Flores: Inmate No. 999299 at the Polunsky Unit in Livingston, Texas. A guy who was sentenced to death over his alleged role in a deadly burglary. And who has been in federal prison for 25 years, and counting, including 23 hours a day in solitary confinement.
You should know that Charles maintains his innocence — he was convicted, in large part, due to a since-discredited tactic known as “forensic hypnosis” — but he is running out of options. As we’ll discuss.
And yet… there is one misery that Charles very willingly imposes upon himself:
The Dallas Cowboys.
And he’s not the only inmate, at the depths of incarceration, who does this.
PTFO correspondent David Fleming brought us a database that includes a staggering number of death-row inmates who use their last words to do the same thing: pay tribute to their favorite sports teams.
And so we sent Flem to one of the most notorious supermax facilities in America… to talk about them Cowboys.
And find out what life is really like on death row.
I highly, highly recommend you take the time to watch the full episode, which is not simply a downer — I promise. And click here for more on Charles’ case.
