These United States have spent the last few days genuflecting before athletic greatness. We bow to Patrick Mahomes (who’s now won two straight Super Bowls). And to Tom Brady (who just starred in two different commercials during Super Bowl LVIII, neither of which was for FTX).
And tomorrow, suddenly, is February 14th.
So for this show — our PTFO Valentine’s Day Spectacular — I sought to convene a gold-medal summit to answer one question underlying all of this:
Is athletic greatness an aphrodisiac?
Which is why, sitting in one chair today, is Sue Bird (who won four WNBA titles, two NCAA championships, and five Olympic gold medals). And right next to her is Megan Rapinoe (who won two World Cups, a Golden Boot, a Golden Ball, and an Olympic gold).
There’s no couple in sports history quite like them.
But you should also know that while today’s episode begins with this inquiry, the real fun of it — the reason we decided to run this show longer than any we’ve done before (!) — is that Megan and Sue go so much deeper.
Into their radically different and darkly comical retirements. And being closeted. And sex. And Trump’s tweets. And marriage (spoiler alert). And each other.
I hadn’t heard Megan and Sue talk about all this stuff, like this, until they sat down in our studio. I wouldn’t have expected them to. But I’m so glad they did.
Happy Valentine’s Day,
Pablo
