I Think I Solved the Mystery of the NFL's Secret Scammer and a $5 Billion Check
EPISODE 3: The Redemption Song of Brian Davis.
By now, at the end of my show’s first week, I imagine you understand that Pablo Torre Finds Out is a show about curiosities. (As I type this, by the way, lil ol’ PTFO is a top-five sports show on Apple Podcasts. Please rate/review, in an unending cycle, unto eternity, and obviously subscribe to our stupidly ambitious YouTube videos.)
Well: over the past five months, no curiosity has consumed me quite like the object — the mystery — at the center of today’s months-long PTFO investigation.
The object is a $5 billion bank draft. A form of guaranteed check. A check which was used by businessman Brian Davis… the former captain of the 1990’s Duke basketball dynasty… in his (infamous) attempt to purchase the Washington Commanders this spring.
It’s a story unlike any other I’ve ever investigated. And if you happened to already hear about the Brian Davis story — because it became a real thing, especially in D.C. and across the NFL, as we’ll explain — I promise that the real twist, a completely new twist, is exclusively reported in today’s show.
And it all involves the Imperial Japanese Army; Bob Marley; Coach K; the worst owner in all of American sports; Bank of America; the Philippines; cashews; and, yeah, please just listen to this fancy narrative podcast we made you for the rest.
Consider it PTFO’s version of an NFL season preview:
Thank you,
Pablo
Listened on the way to not see Pearl Jam in Indy. Great story!
What a first week and this episode was great.
